The JayDoc Free Clinic provides physical therapy to individuals without insurance, as well as those who have government or primary insurance coverage. Services are designed to promote wellness and injury prevention through health education and direct treatment. This student-run clinic is supervised by a licensed physical therapist and organized by the DPT students of the KU Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.
Linda Denney, PT, serves as the Director of Physical Therapy Services.
A visit to the JayDoc Free Clinic includes:
- Initial evaluation to assess the patient’s needs
- Integration of treatment, education and a home program specific to the patient’s needs
- Option/recommendation of a follow-up visit
The JayDoc Free Clinic provides physical therapy services one night, every 2 weeks. Patients are scheduled after receipt of the physician referral, however walk-ins are welcome. Progress reports and initial evaluation documentation are sent to the referring physician to ensure ongoing communication.
Determining the severity of an injury is a large part of a physical therapist's daily routine. Here, a PT student volunteer performs a neurodynamic test to better understand her patient's symptoms.
Physical therapy services are provided for orthopedic injuries, neurological conditions, brace and wheelchair fitting, gait and balance deviations and consultations in wellness, fitness and wound care. Diagnoses include (but are not limited to): low back pain, neck pain, shoulder, knee and ankle pain, wrist and hand injuries, stroke and cardiopulmonary conditions, metabolic conditions and overuse syndromes. Advice is provided for conditioning exercise, edema and wound management.
The JayDoc Free Clinic is a great atmosphere for DPT students to critically evaluate a patient and prescribe an intervention in a clinical setting under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. By providing free services to individuals in need, the students gain a sense of pride and confidence while helping those in their own community. JayDoc physical therapy is truly ‘helping others help themselves’.
