Professional Background
Jernigan's clinical background is in spine and peripheral joint outpatient orthopedics. As a clinical instructor in the
DPT program, he currently teaches physical therapy tests and measures which introduces all the basic physical therapy evaluation skills including goniometry and manual muscle testing. He also teaches health promotion through the lifespan, which encompasses a variety of topics - all directed toward promoting the health and wellness of physical therapy clients. In addition, Jernigan assists with grading practical exams for the musculoskeletal courses in the curriculum.
He is also currently a staff physical therapist for services in the
Silver City Health Clinic.
Academic Background
Jernigan first began his physical therapy work at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan., with a Bachelor of Science in exercise science. Jernigan then transitioned to the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., to earn his Master of Science in physical therapy. Jernigan is working towards the completion of his PhD in Rehabilitation Science.
Research Focus
Current research involves people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and aims to improve treatment for these individuals especially as it relates to fall prevention. Through this research, it is hoped that clinically useful and accurate fall risk assessment tools for people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy can be identified. This research also seeks to better understand risk factors for falls and also the factors that influence quality of life in people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
